Ethnic Minority Achievement Support Service (EMASS)
The Ethnic Minority Achievement Support Service (EMASS) is a free service and comprises an English as an Additional Language (EAL) coordinator, teachers and bilingual teaching assistants.
Our aim is to work with early years practitioners, primary teachers, classroom assistants and senior managers in Swindon to improve the opportunities and outcomes for Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) and EAL pupils and their communities.
We aim to work in partnership to raise the standards of attainment and narrow the achievement gap for those minority groups who are particularly at risk of underachieving by providing:
- consultancy and advice
- strategies to support development of EAL
- bilingual support for new EAL learners
- translation of school letters and displays
- collaborative teaching in the classroom
- audit tools for self evaluation in relation to race equality, cultural diversity and provision
- suggestions on making the curriculum more accessible and relevant to BME pupils
