Anna Richardson - Interim Governor Support Manager

The Governor Support Service provides training, guidance and support to clerks and governors to enable them to fulfil their statutory duties and be confident in providing robust challenge and support to school leadership teams. Ofsted recognise the key role of governors and will expect to find evidence of governors’ impact on strategic leadership. Schools and Academies are encouraged to invest in the development of their governors to ensure they can make a full contribution to this key role.

Services provided free of charge:

  • Management of the appointment of Local Authority governors
  • Establishment and update of instruments of government for Local Authority maintained schools
  • Management of the elections for governor representatives on Council committees dealing with education

In response to the wide responsibilities placed on volunteer governors, the Governor Support Service also provides a wide range of training courses keeping governors and clerks up to date with legislative changes at a local and national level and supporting governors in all areas of their roles. Training is provided centrally or sometimes at schools for individual governing boards or as one to one sessions particularly for clerks and/or chairs. Examples of the service include:

  • Regular briefings sent by email to the clerk and chair containing information relevant to the roles and responsibilities of governors and their clerks.
  • Advice and guidance on the interpretation of legal and policy requirements
  • Comprehensive training programme for new governors
  • Range of training (approximately 50 events over the year) enabling governors and clerks to develop their expertise
  • Opportunities for networking and liaison with senior LA officers and other governors and clerks
  • Training programme and on-going support for clerks, including the clerks handbook
  • Support and resources for governing board self-evaluation and improvement and new governor recruitment
  • Access to web pages with up to date resources
  • Standard governing body membership to the NGA

  • Information packs for Chairs of Governors and clerks

Clerking for a full governing board or committee meeting
If you find yourself without a clerk for a governing board meeting or panel hearing, Anna may be able to attend the meeting to take the minutes and type them up.
Please contact Anna for the cost of this service.

Governing Board Self-Evaluation/Review
This extended facilitated review of governance would be particularly applicable for governing boards expecting an Ofsted Inspection and needing to be able to demonstrate evidence of their focus on strengthening governance or where an Ofsted inspector has made recommendation for a review of governance.

The review is inclusive of a desktop audit of minutes and documents, facilitated whole governing body self-evaluation and informal interviews with the chair of governors, the Headteacher and clerk.  The review concludes with a report highlighting the strengths of the governing board and recommendations for development. The governing board may then draw on this report to form a governing board development plan.
Please contact Anna for the cost of this service.
