School Travel Plans
All schools are encouraged by the DfE to develop School Travel Plans. These documents identify the barriers to safe and sustainable travel and suggest actions to overcome them. They also celebrate work that schools are already doing in this area.

School travel plans can be developed by individual schools or clusters of schools, particularly where they share a site, are located close together or have some other significant connection. The whole school community should be involved, including pupils, parents, staff and Governors, with a named individual or group taking the lead. If appropriate, this could be the School Council or another pupil group.
School Travel Plans fit closely with Healthy Schools Status and the Eco-schools awards. It is vital that they are kept up-to-date to reflect changes in education, transport or physical aspects of school sites - an up-to-date travel plan will be required with most planning applications.. There is a new national accreditation scheme for School Travel Plans, which can achieve ‘Sustainable’, ‘Higher Standards’ or ‘Outstanding’ levels. Further details are available from the School Travel Advisor.
