Emotional Literacy Support Assistant Project (ELSA)

What is ELSA?

The ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) project was originally designed by Sheila Burton, Educational Psychologist to build the capacity of schools to support the emotional needs of their pupils from within their own resources. It recognises that children learn better and are happier in school if their emotional needs are also addressed.

ELSAs are trained to plan and deliver individual or group programmes of support to pupils in their school who are experiencing temporary or longer term additional emotional needs.  ELSAs receive clinical supervision from educational psychologists but they are line managed from within their own schools.

Key points:

  • Each school to receive two free places
  • 6 day course and follow up supervision
  • Tri-funded by Swindon Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), Public Health and Swindon Virtual School (SBC)

To find out what is involved and how an ELSA could benefit your school, please click here.
